Adele has strongly denied rumours that she has throat cancer, following the cancellation of her remaining 2011 tour dates. Although the singer is to undergo surgery, she is expected to completely recuperate from the procedure to repair her vocal cords.
"We would like to reiterate that Adele is to undergo surgery for a haemorrhaged vocal cord," her publicist said in a statement. "All reports regarding any other condition are 100% false."
Concern for Adele's condition bubbled up over the weekend, as hundreds of Twitter users mistakenly claimed that the singer had cancer. Before long, #prayforadele had become a trending topic.
Adele is hardly the first singer to undergo vocal cord surgery: Elton John, Graham Nash and Stephen Tyler have had similar, successful treatments. "I have absolutely no choice but to recuperate properly and fully, or I risk damaging my voice forever," Adele wrote on her blog. She hopes to resume touring next year.
