Understanding SNAP Income Limits

For gross monthly income, which refers to household income before any program deductions are applied, it generally must be at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty line.
In the case of a family of three in federal fiscal year 2023, the poverty line used for calculating SNAP benefits is $1,920 a month.
Therefore, 130 percent of the poverty line for a three-person family amounts to $2,495 a month, or about $29,940 annually.
It's important to note that the poverty level varies for different family sizes, being higher for larger families and lower for smaller ones.

Eligibility and Benefit Calculation
To be eligible for SNAP benefits, a household must meet three key tests:
Gross Monthly Income: As mentioned, the gross income must generally be at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty line for the household's size.
Net Income: Net income, which is the household income after deductions are applied, must also be at or below the poverty line.
Asset Limits: The value of assets owned by the household must fall below certain limits.
Households without a member aged 60or older or with a disability must have assets of $2,750 or less.
Households with such a member must have assets of $4,250 or less.
What is the highest income for food stamps?
SNAP expects eligible families to contribute 30 percent of their net income towards food expenses.
Those with no net income receive the maximum SNAP benefit, determined by the cost of the USDA's Thrifty Food Plan (TFP). This plan calculates the cost of purchasing and preparing a nutritionally adequate diet for individuals in low-income households, assuming they take steps to stretch their food budget.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, temporary increases in SNAP benefits were implemented through emergency allotments (EAs).
These increased benefits were designed to help families during the crisis. However, it's essential to note that these increases will end after the February 2023 issuance.
