Has an African player ever won Wimbledon? Ons Jabeur has chance to make history (1)

Ons Jabeur has reached the Wimbledon women’s singles final for the second year in a row and has the chance to make history again.

World No.6 Jabeur came back from behind to beat No.2 seeded Aryna Sabalenka 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 and book her place in the showpiece Grand Slam final on Saturday.

The Tunisian will face Marketa Vondrousova with hopes of making history once again after becoming the first African woman in the Open Era to reach the Wimbledon final last year.

She lost that match to Elena Rybakina but now has the chance to make amends and go one step further at SW19.

Has an African player ever won Wimbledon?

An African player has never won a singles title at Wimbledon in the Open Era.

Jabeur can become the first African to achieve the feat if she beats Vondrousova on Centre Court on Saturday.

The 28-year-old has already made history at the tournament so far, beating three players seeded in the top ten on her way to the final.

This is the first time since tennis icon Serena Williams in 2012 that a woman has managed to pull that off at Wimbledon.

But now her place in the showpiece this weekend is secured, Jabeur is putting all of her focus on making her country proud.

She said: "For me there is one goal. I'm going for it. I will prepare 100 per cent.

"Hopefully I can make history not just for Tunisia, but for Africa."

The World No.6 also previewed the clash with Vondrousova, saying: "I think a final is a final. You're playing someone, Grand Slam champion or not. I think it's going to be very difficult.

"It can happen for both. Whoever could handle more the emotions, whoever could be more ready on the court, will definitely win that match.

"For me, that's why I said I want to focus more on myself. I want to make my path worth it, winning against all these Grand Slam champions to be in the final.

“I'm going full in, and hopefully this time it will work."
