An easy, no-cook, yet delicious treat that comes with history and tradition. Strawberries and cream have long been served at Wimbledon since the first tournament in 1877 and since Monday is the start of this 2 week tennis event, I’m bringing you the recipe and the history.

Strawberries and Cream History

It is believed that it was King George V who first brought strawberries and cream to Wimbledon in the early 1900’s. The reason? Strawberries were the only fruit available at the time and apparently strawberries were very fashionable to eat at that time.

Nothing says summer has arrived in England more than the Wimbledon tennis championship. It is the highlight of the British summer social calendar and anyone who’s anyone will be attending.

Strawberries are at their peak right now, so it’s perfect timing because more than 34 tons (1.92 million strawberries and 1,000’s of gallons of cream, along with more than 26,000 bottles of Champagne will be served. Wow, that’s a lot of hungry (and thirsty) people attending.

How to hull strawberries

It may seem like a silly thing, isn’t it a matter of just cutting off the green top? Yes, but you also want to keep the strawberries shape for a nice presentation.

After removing the leaves, I take a small paring knife and cut around the white part so that a ‘cone’ shape of the core is removed and from the side, the strawberries still look perfectly intact.

The cream is not whipped or sweetened. The thick, cold cream is simply drizzled over the sweet strawberries and eaten that way. It’s the best and only way to enjoy them, so why mess with tradition?

So if you’re a tennis fan (or even if you’re not), strawberries and cream are the perfect summer treat.

Enjoy a Wimbledon Style Picnic

In addition to strawberries and cream, they serve an array of delicious and gourmet food that you can enjoy at home. Try my elegant Tea Sandwiches along with Classic English Scones for an afternoon tea feast that is classically British.

Another tradition since 1971 at Wimbledon is the Pimm’s No. 1 Cup co*cktail. Which is also a traditional British summer drink (see pic below), which goes hand-in-hand with strawberries and cream.

I also have a delicious twist on the classic Pimm’s, Pimm’s strawberry mint co*cktail (below)that would also pair perfectly with strawberries and cream.

I was at Wimbledon seventy years ago – and can still remember the wonderful taste of the strawberries, so much better than those we have in California.

This is so true. They are very proud of their sourced strawberries at Wimbledon and can’t be beat.

Since this is November and strawberries are out of season, I like to dice them after coring and sprinkle about 1 T. of sugar over them, mixing well and allowing them to macerate ~20 minutes. To serve, I spoon as much of the macerated berries as I want (with their juice) into a dish and pour heavy whipping cream over – and I like a lot of cream with my berries. And I’m going to prep my strawberries right now!

This sounds like a delicious way to make the most of out of season strawberries. Enjoy!

How many servings does this recipe make?

    • Janette @ Reply

The serving is at the top of the recipe, it yields 2 servings. I factored 10 strawberries per person but this can be changed according to how many people want.

This one reminds me of my childhood. During the summer months, nearly every night after dinner we would have strawberries and cream for dessert. I just loved it! Though I had no idea that it was/is a Wimbledon tradition! I’m going to have to let my mom know 🙂

I had no idea this was a “thing” for Wimbledon. I blame this on the Middletons who have their lovely box seats at Wimbledon but are never photographed eating strawberries and heavy cream. But still, they are definitely missing out and this should be a tradition everywhere.
