Definition: The Davis Cup, the tennis equivalent of the football World Cup, was named after American collegian Dwight Filley Davis, who came up with the idea to start a challenge tennis match between the USA and Great Britain. First played in 1900, it was originally called the International Lawn Tennis Trophy. Davis came up with a three-day format for the event that is still in practice: two singles matches on the first and third days, and a doubles match on the second day. Now, it is a team knock-out tournament played over the course of a year.

Description: The competition has grown from just two competing nations to 142. But only the top 16 nations - known as the World Group - can actually win the Davis Cup. The others are split into three groups with promotion to and relegation from each. Their main target is to make it into the World Group. India has not qualified for the elite World Group since their 4-1 defeat to Serbia in 2011. India first participated in the tournament in 1921 and has been involved in 191 fixtures winning 114 and losing 77. Leander Paes has been credited with the most number of wins, standing tall at 89. India has reached Davis Cup finals on three occasions - 1966, 1974 and 1987.

In 1966, the Indian team comprising Ramanathan Krishnan and Jaideep Mukerjea succumbed to the mighty Australians after having beaten Brazil and the erstwhile West Germany in the prior rounds. In 1974, Vijay Amritraj beat the legendary Bjorn Borg, and Anand Amritraj also went on to collect two doubles titles. The Indian team of Vijay, Anand and Jasjit Singh guided India past some tricky fixtures against Australia and the Soviet Union to make it to the finals against South Africa. India were touted as one of the strongest contenders but refused to participate in the finals as a mark of disapproval of the South African government's apartheid policies.
