Wimbledon 2023: Mirra Andreeva fined $8,000 for unsporting behaviour following fourth-round exit - Eurosport (2024)

Wimbledon highlights: Djokovic, Alcaraz progress; Rybakina & Medvedev secure walkover wins

Mirra Andreeva has been issued with a fine totalling $8,000 (£6,190).

The 16-year-old was looking to become the youngest player to reach the last eight of Wimbledon since Anna Kournikova in 1997 but couldn’t contain Madison Keys in a 3-6 7-6(4) 6-2 loss.

After losing the second set to force a decider, Andreeva launched her racquet in frustration, receiving a warning for a court violation over unsportsmanlike conduct.

She then appeared to throw her racquet again when Keys forced deuce at 2-5 in the deciding set as she received a second warning and an automatic point penalty.

Andreeva argued her case with Azemar Engzell, saying: "Do you understand what you are doing? I didn't throw the racquet. I slid. It's the wrong decision. I slid and then I fell."

However, the decision stood, and when Keys won the match with the next point, Andreeva shook hands with her opponent but not with the umpire.

"The first warning I got, I think I deserved it ... I was a bit frustrated. So that's why I threw the racket," Andreeva told reporters afterwards.

"Here I cannot say anything, she was right to give me a warning. I didn't complain or talk to her about it...

"For me (the second time) it's a controversial point because I'm not sure if… I don't know which decision was right. But, honestly, I didn't have any intention to throw the racquet. I slid.

"Honestly, I thought that I will fall forward. Maybe it did look like I threw the racquet. I don't know. I didn't see any videos yet.

"For me, she didn't do a right decision. Yes, that's why I didn't want to shake hands with her."
