How many black Grand Slam winners?
African-Americans have won a staggering total of 44 Grand Slam singles titles. Of those 44 titles, Serena has won 23. It should be mentioned that the only other black player to win a Grand Slam was the French player Yannick Noah, who won the French Open in 1983.
In 1990, Garrison reached the finals at Wimbledon, the first Black woman to reach a Grand Slam final since Gibson. McNeil reached the semifinals at Wimbledon in 1994. Five years later, Serena Williams won the U.S. Open, the first of her record 23 Grand Slam titles.
Arthur Ashe became the first (and remains the only) African American male tennis player to win the U.S. Open and Wimbledon singles titles. He was also the first African American man to earn the No. 1 ranking in the world and the first to earn induction into the Tennis Hall of Fame.
