40 32.7 .00 Fatal fire may have been caused by electric blanket The fire that led to the death of an 84- year -old Louisville woman over the weekend might have been caused by an electric blanket, Louisville Fire Department officials said yesterday. Bertha Louise of 106 was discovered dead in her wheelchair near the kitchen sink in her apartment about 5:30 p.m. Sunday. Deputy Coroner Lloyd Roemele said her death was caused by smoke inhalation. "Officially the cause of the fire is listed as undetermined," said Lt.

William Foushee, chief of the city Fire Department's arson squad. "But the suspicion is that an electric blanket could have caused the fire." An electric blanket was found in the Nunn fund gives $1,000 for marker at Valley Station Gov. Louie B. Nunn has contributed $1,000 from his contingency fund to help pay, for the Station new Vietnam Louisville. Memorial Valley near The memorial, which Nunn helped dedicate on Veterans Day, is expected to cost about $100,000 when completed.

A 50-foot-high tripodal structure, carillons and lighted water fountain have been finished. Still to be added, when funds become available, are a statue, landscaping and blacktopping of the area. About $20,000 has already been raised for the project, mainly from contributions by relatives of war dead to commemorate American lives lost in Vietnam. Charles E. Hendrix, who had the original idea for the memorial, said last night that contributions would be welcome to raise the remaining $80,000.

The memorial is located at 9718 Dixie Highway, two blocks north of Valley High School. U.S. sergeant killed in Bangkok BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) T. Sgt. Charles A.

Distemper serum failed to protect dogs, suit says A $500,000 suit was filed yesterday in Jefferson Circuit Court on behalf of a local veterinarian, who alleges that a dog distemper vaccine failed to protect "great numbers" of dogs against the disease. The plaintiff, Dr.

Damon R. Campbell, who operates Blue Cross Animal Hospital on East Broadway, said in his suit that the vaccine "was negligently or otherwise improperly manufactured. Named as defendants were Cutter Laboratories, of California; its subsidHaver-Lockhart Laboratories, of Kansas; and a Louisville firm, Mutual Supply Inc. A co-plaintiff in the suit is Mrs. Jessie M.

Hubbard, of 1410 South Hanco*ck, who is seeking $2,500 for the loss of her French poodle. The dog was among those vaccinated with a serum identified in the suit as "Haver-Lockhart Canine Distemper-Hepatitis Vaccine." Campbell's suit said the serum was administered between June 1969 and January 1970. It states that he became aware of problems with the serum about April 15. In seeking the $500,000 award, Campbell's suit contends that his professional reputation was damaged due to use of the vaccine and that he "will continue to suffer loss of income in the future." Edward Cutter, secretary and corporate counsel of Cutter, said he was "aware of (Campbell's) dissatisfaction" and that the company has figured in "no other lawsuit involving this product." bathtub. The controls to the blanket indicated that it had been turned on high, a Fire Department official said. The official says the woman could have thrown the electric blanket into the bathtub, then tried to get some water from the kitchen to extinguish the burning bed. Her first floor apartment was filled with smoke, but the was confined to the bed area. The is believed to fire have occurred sometime Saturday night.

Although fire officials aren't saying officially that the fire was caused by an electric blanket, Maj. Merle Brown, Louisville fire marshal, was asked to give some safety tips about the use of electric blankets. "With any electrical appliances--in. cluding blankets -you should take time out to read the instructions very carefully," Brown said. He also said that the electrical cords should be checked thoroughly to discover any defects.

Also, Brown said, instructions on washing the blanket and about not wadding it up should be strictly followed. "Generally, you should exercise the same care with an electric blanket as with any electric appliance," Brown said. "And I imagine many people got such appliances for Christmas."
